About Miami CPHP

The Miami Center for Public Health Preparedness ( Miami CPHP) is part of a nationwide network of centers established to support preparedness efforts of state and local health departments throughout the United States . Miami CPHP is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Miami CPHP  is committed to excellence in citizen disaster training, public health workforce preparedness, and international programming, with a specific focus on Hispanic/Latino populations within the United States and throughout Latin America . Miami CPHP provides access to disaster preparedness materials and training programs for limited English-proficient (LEP) persons living in the United States as well as for direct utilization by citizens of Spanish-speaking nations.

Structure:   Miami CPHP operates with the Center for Disaster & Extreme Event Preparedness (DEEP Center), Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL. Miami CPHP products are developed in response to community needs and are disseminated to the national network of centers via the Centers for Public Health Preparedness Resource Center.

Community Disaster Training for Hispanics/Latinos:

Since 2006, Miami CPHP has trained 7,000 Florida Hispanics and Latinos in community-based Spanish-language courses focusing on family disaster preparedness, with special emphasis on hurricane preparedness. Miami CPHP products are developed in response to community needs and are disseminated to the national network of centers via the Centers for Public Health Preparedness Resource Center . Miami CPHP community training focuses on recent immigrants to the United States , Spanish-speaking migrant workers, restricted-budget families, and other populations at high vulnerability during disasters.

International Collaboration: Miami CPHP collaborates with universities in Argentina , Colombia , and Venezuela on disaster preparedness training with a focus on disaster behavioral health issues.
