SURGE SORT SUPPORT for Healthcare Leadership is the updated and expanded operational version of SURGE SORT SUPPORT. SURGE SORT SUPPORT for Healthcare Leadership is purposefully designed for healthcare leadership, presenting an energized overview of strategic thinking that integrates medical and behavioral preparedness strategies.
SURGE SORT SUPPORT for Healthcare Leadership presents eight interrelated strategies described as “The Octagon.” The morning session is intended for healthcare corporate leadership, providing an overview of all eight octagon strategies. The afternoon session extends the discussion to Joint Commission regulations, NIMS compliance and related topics.
Healthcare professionals, including corporate officers and department directors are the intended audience for the strategic level operational course. Additional hospital and healthcare personnel are welcomed to attend and may be requested to attend by the leadership. Sessions may be provided in a single facility or may include representation from leaders in a healthcare system, network or region.
During Spring 2008, DEEP Center is funded by the Florida Department of Health through its collaborative agreement with the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response to train hospital-based health professionals, with a focus on leadership. Upon request, additional trainings are being conducted in other states for mixed audiences of public health, mental health, healthcare and public safety professionals.

1. Recognize the eight “Octagon” strategies for CONQUERING CATASTROPHIC CASUALTY EVENTS.
2. Integrate key Octagon strategies into Joint Commission-format language, policies and procedures.
3. “Operate the Octagon” strategies to achieve NIMS compliance.
SURGE SORT SUPPORT for Healthcare Leadership provides a systematic set of eight strategies for dealing effectively with mass casualty events. These strategies carefully integrate the medical and psychosocial dimensions of disasters and extreme events. Healthcare leadership is presented with strategic guidance in order to “think behaviorally” about how citizens act and react in disasters. Melding the physical and psychological dimensions of the disaster experience facilitates reality-based planning and preparedness for the true dimensions of hospital and community surge during a catastrophic casualty event.
